‘We are all alive therefore we will die’. We all know this intellectually, and yet most of us have not come to terms with the truth of our existence. We live our lives as if we will go on forever; this ‘head in the sand’ mentality gives us an unrealistic view. We do not realise how liberating it is to face our life with an awareness of our own mortality; how this enriches our experiences and teaches us to value this life.
Everything we perceive appears solid, real, and independent—but how things appear and how they actually exist are very different. According to Buddha’s profound teachings on emptiness, all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, like a dream or an illusion. By understanding this, we can let go of mistaken perceptions that cause suffering and instead experience deep inner peace and lasting freedom.
