This special fasting and purification practice is traditionally done by Kadampa Centers worldwide on Buddha’s Enlightenment day which is celebrated  on April 15.  The practice is performed in conjunction with Eleven-faced Avalokiteshvara prayers and is very powerful in purifying negative karma of body, speech and mind as well as pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. It is also a special method for receiving blessings and improving our experience of love, compassion and bodhichitta.

This practice starts by taking the eight Mahayana precepts according to the prayers entitled A Pure Life at the beginning of the day. It is customary to abstain from all meals apart from lunch.

What to Expect in this Retreat

We will be chanting a special prayer called Drop of Essential Nectar to 1000 armed Avalokiteshvara. Within that prayer, we will collectively make physical or mental prostrations to 1000-armed Avalokiteshvara on behalf of all living beings for about 20 minutes while chanting a verse of praise to Avalokiteshvara. Best to wear comfortable clothing.

About Precepts and Sessions

You must take the precepts before engaging in this retreat at 6:30am. You can attend 1 or all sessions after the precepts. It’s Buddha’s Enlightenment Day — all our actions of body, speech and mind increase. See here for more information on the practice of taking precepts.
