April 15th is Buddha’s Enlightenment Day. Every year we celebrate this event with the traditional fasting purification practice known as Nyungne, using the practice, Drop of Essential Nectar. During this practice we emphasize compassion, the very heart of enlightenment, by engaging in prostrations to 1,000 armed Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
This practice is very powerful for purifying negative karma of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. It is also a special method for receiving blessings and improving our experience of love, compassion and bodhichitta.
When we take the eight Mahayana precepts, we explicitly promise to abstain for twenty-four hours from eight actions: i. killing, ii. stealing, iii. sexual activity, iv. lying, v. taking intoxicants, vi. eating after lunch, vii. sitting on high or luxurious thrones or seats, vii. wearing ornaments, perfume, etc, and singing and dancing, etc.
Please visit kadampa.org for more information about taking precepts
